“The VistaBeam 600 is the first large fluorescent soft light that uses unique optical characteristics to project a very bright, very soft beam of light,” said Kino Flo founder Frieder Hochheim. “Unlike conventional soft lights, which disperse their light in a broad pattern, the VistaBeam concentrates a beam of light approximately six meters from the fixture.”
Hochheim said during the award presentation that Kino Flo used a new computer-controlled design process for the parabolic lamp reflectors which display a highly efficient lateral beam of light. By rotating the VistaBeam vertically or horizontally, the operator can control the beam angle.
Kino Flo has introduced a new 96-watt single ended, twin tube style lamp to go with the VistaBeams. The special lamps come in four styles: 2900 Kelvin for tungsten light, 5500 Kevin for day light, 525nm green for green screen and 420nm blue for blue screen lighting.
Hochheim, who began the presentation in German, told the awards audience that cinematographers and lighting directors have been using the VistaBeam for nearly a year since the first models were introduced in Los Angeles. Some of high profile films using scores of VistaBeams include recent films such as You, Me and Dupree, Slipstream, Smokin’ Aces, and soon-to-be released projects such as Spiderman III, Harry Potter and Bob Bailey.
The VistaBeam 600 uses six of the specially designed True Match® lamps to display a much light as a 4,000 Watt tungsten soft light, but the VistaBeam operates very coolly and uses only a fraction of the power (about 10 times less than conventional hot lights). When operated facing downward, the VistaBeam 600 can be used in place of, or alongside 6,000 Watt space lights, trimmed with silk diffusion, for large area stage lighting.
However, unlike space lights, the VistaBeam 600 can produce both tungsten and natural daylight quality soft illumination. Lamps can last for more than a year under normal operating conditions, saving studios thousands of dollars in tungsten lamp replacement costs.
Operators can switch the VistaBeam lamps individually or together via DMX remote control or manual controls on the fixture. The light levels can be changed in ¼ f-stop increments. Lamps can be sequenced to produce both daylight or tungsten quality light from one fixture. Special Kino Flo lamps can be installed for optimal visual effects lighting on blue screen and green screen sets.
VistaBeams rotate 360 degrees on a robust center mount for more versatile lighting options on stands or when hung from a studio grid system. A removable yoke mount can also be attached in two positions, which makes the VistaBeams more convenient to hang for cyclorama and TV broadcast studio lighting.
Kino Flo includes with the VistaBeam 600 a focusing black honeycomb louver and gel frame for attaching diffusion. Accessories include additional styles of focusing louvers, a hand held remote control, mounting adapters and assemblies, diffusion materials and shipping cases.
The VistaBeam 600 has a smaller sibling called the VistaBeam 300 that is half the size of the VistaBeam 600, and can be fitted with the same accessories listed above.
Kino Flo, based in Burbank, California, designs and manufactures professional fluorescent lighting systems for motion picture and television production. In addition to the Cinec “Oscar”, Kino Flo has earned a Technical Achievement Award from the Motion Picture Academy of Arts and Sciences, as well as other awards. In 2007, Kino Flo will celebrate its 20th anniversary as an innovator of specialty lighting for film, video and photo capture.
Cinec, held every two years in Munich, covers the technical aspects of film making. This was the sixth event for the international trade fair. More than 140 exhibitors and 3,000 attendees visited this year.
