FreeStyle T42/T22 LED

Kino Flo® Lighting Systems’ True Match® FreeStyle LED tubes are specially designed for operation in FreeStyle T42 & T22 fixtures for film production or stage design lighting. The FreeStyle LED tubes display Kino Flo’s True Match white light and RGBWW color management system found in Kino Flo’s LED lighting fixtures. The tubes are 4ft (1.2m) & 2ft (0.6m). On camera, FreeStyle LED tubes photograph with the same softness, the same subtle color reproduction as Kino Flo’s award-winning T12 high-output lamps. In addition to the >95 photo rendering index, cinematographers will see the difference the 310° LED tube makes when operated in a fixture or out of the fixture as a remote “sabre” of light. Paired with the FreeStyle fixture and light intensifying reflector, the tube projects soft light forward at a 100° beam angle at about the same light levels you’d get from a 1000W tungsten softlight

The White menu features Dimming, tunable Kelvin range from 2700K tungsten to 6500K daylight and Green/Magenta
control channels. The Green/Magenta control can be scaled from 0- to 100, where 25 = ¼ correction, 50 = ½ correction and
100 = full correction.

In the Gels/Hue menu, the Kelvin range is extended to 2500K Kelvin to 9900K daylight and a fourth channel is called Gel.
The Gel channel includes Kino Flo presets such as blue & green screen, sodium vapor, mercury vapor as well as over 100 well-known lighting gels. The gel function can be applied to any Kelvin temperature and by pushing the control knob in/out, the gel will be applied
or removed. A fifth channel called Hue Angle (Hue) and sixth channel Saturation (Sat) are also included in the gel menu. These two channels behave similar to a traditional color wheel, where white light is in the center and Hue Angle determines the color along a
360-degree range and Saturation determines how much color is applied. With the Hue Angle and Saturation it is possible to create over
2 million color combinations!

The RGB color menu gives individual control of red, green and blue LED’s. The RGB mode is a great way to work with apps with predetermined RGB presets or color wheels. RGB menu is also a great feature to dial in specific gel RGB values or when controlling colors from a DMX desk.

The FX (Effects) menu introduced on June 1, 2018 provides access to popular effects such as Candle, Fire, TV, Police, Lightning, Paparazzi, Pulse and Scroll. When on the desired effect, there are several pre-sets as well as control parameters that can be altered.
For example, in the Lightning effect there is a “Storm” and “Frankenstein” preset, but it is possible to change Rate to provide additional variation.

True Match® 4.0 Firmware update in September 2019 includes groundbreaking features: CIE xy, Camera Profiles LUTs and
Color Space selection.

The CIE xy determines the color displayed by its X and Y space coordinates. For example, with a handheld color meter like the
Sekonic C-800, users can obtain a CIE xy reading from any light source and input the CIE xy coordinates into the Kino Flo LED fixture
to match colors closely.

Camera Profiles LUTs available for the following cinema cameras and more to follow: Panavsion DXL, Sony Venice, Arri Alexa,
Panasonic Varicam. Kino Flo’s True Match® 4.0 firmware balances their LED lights to the cameras rather than the other way around.
The Kino Flo designed tungsten and daylight LED emitters harmonize with the camera sensors even as the color temperature settings
are adjusted.

The Color Space defines the RGB color space (white point and RGB primary colors) as a means of matching color points between manufacturing.  Defining the color space takes the guesswork out of post-production workflow and color grading.  Included in the
4.0 firmware are: rec 709/sRGB, P3 D65, rec 2020, and ESTA E1.54.

The FreeStyle 140 LED DMX controller                                             The FreeStyle LED Tube

FreeStyle LED System

The FreeStyle T42/T22 LED System (SYS-FT42U/SYS-FT22U) consist of:  FreeStyle T42/T22 LED Fixture plus 2 x FS-48 LED Tubes or
2 x FS-24 LED Tubes (fig. 1), Mounting Plate (fig. 2), FreeStyle 140X LED DMX Controller (fig.3), and Extension Cable (fig.4).

It was designed in this manner to allow the greatest flexibility in lighting solutions for challenging situations.

  The FreeStyle T42/T22 Fixture

The FreeStyle T42/T22 Fixture houses the tubes and is comprised of built-in barndoors, a Louver, Reflector, and tube Harness.
The Louver and Reflector are held in place with Velcro fasteners. There is a strain relief on the tube Harness to ensure the connectors
don’t pull off the lamps during operation. To get the harness away from the fixture, turn the ¼ turn fastener and rotate counter-clockwise to release.

FreeStyle T42/T22 Fixture can be used in several configurations:

1) Complete fixture with all components combined.
2) "Harness Only" - The wiring harness is removed from the fixture so that the user can build a softbox, hide behind Plexiglass or rig into
tight locations. The wiring harness uses Kino Flo designed Tube connectors so tubes can be operated independently of the fixture.
3) Can use Louver to give direction to the light or remove louver to give broad coverage over an area, such as lighting blue and
    green screens etc.

Kino Flo tubes can operate inside the fixture or independently with only the wiring harness.

The FreeStyle Reflector has a unique design to accommodate the aluminum channel on the back of the FreeStyle tube. It provides even light distribution and maximizes light output. In addition, it acts as a heatsink and allows the FreeStyle Tubes to run cooler.

  Mounting Fixture

One of the design features that makes the fixture so popular is the twist-on removable Center Mount. When it's on, the fixture mounts easily to a light stand; when it's off, the fixture is flat and can be hand-held, or hidden in a space too small to place a stand-mounting fixture. When the mount is removed, the grommet holes along the edge of the fixture are designed to allow the fixture to be screwed
to a wall or ceiling through its eyelets.

The standard mount comes with a KinoGrip Mount w/ 3/8" Pin (MTP-KG41) that clips into a grip head. The ball and socket mount allows the fixture to be oriented in a broad range of angles.

There is also a Baby Receiver version and Baby Receiver Short (16mm) (see below) available as accessories. The yellow wire loops are there to provide attachment points for a safety chain.

Block/KF21 Battery

                 BAT-KF21                                           BAT-MM1 Mafer Mount

The KF21 battery can power 28.8V (20-34VDC) applications.  Run time for the FreeStyle T42/T22 LED is approximately 1 hour and 10 minutes at full brightness.  When fixtures are dimmed, the battery will last longer.

Charge time is only 1.5 hours versus Lithium batteries that take approximately 4 hours to fully charge.  Unlike lithium batteries, the Kino Flo/BlockBattery is also travel friendly with no travel restrictions. BlockBattery Travel Documentation.

The Kino Flo/BlockBattery system includes a Mafer Mount, BAT-MM1, with 28.8V output with 3-Pin xlr, 3ft.  The battery slides onto the mount and mounts onto a Mafer clamp.

The 3-pin xlr cable connects to the FreeStyle 140 LED DMX Controller.

For more information, see Battery.

DMX Operation

The FreeStyle 140 LED DMX operates on three DMX channels (in White mode) using DMX512 (six DMX channels in Color mode).
The first channel operates dimming; the 2nd channel operates Kelvin color temperature control; the 3rd channel operates the Hue.

In Gels/Hue mode: 4th channel operates the Gel; 5th channel operates the Hue angle and the 6th channel operates the Saturation.
In RGB mode, 4th channel operates Red; 5th channel operates Green and the 6th channel operates Blue.

In CIE xy mode, first channel operates dimming; 2nd channel operates x; the 3rd channel operates y.

For FX (Effects) mode, see True Match® Firmware 4.0 DMX mapping.
